Discussion:
Linux Q2 Bots?

Hello list!

I realize that this doesn't *directly* relate to the Icculus Q2 work,
fantastic though it is, but it seems the best place to ask. Does anyone
happen to have a source where I could get ahold of a Q2 Deathmatch bot
that works in Linux? I know that I used to have one back in The Day,
but I can't find it in any of my old backup CDs. There's a few
tantalizing links I could find on Google for a Linux version of the
Eraser bot, but all the FTP links that I could come up with turned out
to be dead.

So, anyone know if a Linux Q2 bot still exists?

Thanks in advance!

EraserBot, if I recall, is not portable because it relies on a
certain closed source library (correct if I'm wrong). Supposedly the
source to GladiatorBot is lurking somewhere, but I haven't been able
to find it.

There is only ONE Q2 bot that I know of that already has a working
3d-bit binary compiled for Linux. Sadly I forgot the name of it. It
was some weird name, likde 3dbz2 or something, and I found it on a
Russian server a long time ago (I can't seem to locate it now). I'm
sure I still have the tarball at home (I'm at school right now), so
when I get back I'll post it on my server for download.

Obviously, it's 3rd Zigock Bot II (3zb2). http://ponpoko.tri6.net/3zb2/

He seems to provide source code on his site. The license is
unmentioned. I emailed the author about the possibility of releasing it
under the GPL.

Anyway, until then I've provided a basic makefile for his sources and
repackaged them on my site:

http://www.is-useless.org/q2/

Be warned, its currently x86_64-specific and the binary it makes is
untested. If you've even rudimentary knowledge of makefiles you should
be able to make it work for you.

It would be awesome to have freely available sources for a quake2 bot.
I think it might be a cool project to fix up the bot sources (read: fix
warnings, and then maybe... ?), and combine icculus-q2 with the bot and
perhaps the q2 retexturing project to make a freely-distributable
complete game...

There is the source for the defunct ACE bot in this thread - it's not my
download link, so the URL is the forum link.

I DL'ed this, but yet to play with it.

BTW, handy forums to keep your eye one - some good stuff there.

I have a page:

devoted to making bots/mods (well one so far)
work with linux q2. Additions are welcome.

Heyas Brendan!

I went through the usual steps to try to get an account there so I could work
on a Q2 mod and nobody replied. What else do I need to do to have an
open-source Q2 mod project hosted on icculus.org?

You e-mailed ryan?
If you did, just wait a bit, he is bogged down. I'll bug him about it
when I notice he has free time that needs filling.

Couldn't you just use sourceforge or savannah?

It might depend on the license ... SF projects must use one of the OSI
approved licenses if I remember correctly.

Also icculus is kinda the place to host if your hosting a port of a
commercial game for linux.

Never mind then. Turns out I no longer had the binary, but it looks
like the source code is now on the prowl. I guess this is a win for
everyone, especially if the code is GPLed... :)

Sourceforge is rather big and intimidating to me, however it has lots
of resources, such as the ole compile farm, 100 MB of space, SQL access,
all kinds of stuff... Good site!

Savannah is mostly GNU-related, but does accept non-GNU projects.

The Quake 2 server-side game code that I'm modding was first released under
SDK, then later releases under GPL - so I potentially have a choice there...
But SDK mods seem to just die... OrangeSmoothie's stuff can't be recompiled
for newer libraries, so they rot away, some very cool ideas lost in time....

I've already touched the GPL release code, anyway - the same code that's a
basis for the icculus.org Quake 2 release. Additionally, I've been on this
list for probably two years now and you guys seem very helpful. Honestly, I
only half-know what I'm doing. The ideas are viable, but I'm not proficient
in C. You guys identify and patch bugs frequently and with much more skill
than I can.

I'd never even have started the project in question if it hasn't been gnawing
on me for the past few years -- why hasn't anyone done this for Q2 yet?
I've got an alpha-stable proof-of-concept, some cobbled-together new game
media, about 10 to 20 maps and the potential to be able to load non-mod maps
and script in unique game entities. So... I'll give this a try here at
icculus.org if you'll give it a try. Plus I also like the music of Phish.

(Starts to go into a jam, then stops abruptly)
Thanks!

Karen

Icculus has no problems of hard drive space like sourceforge, last time
I tryed to update a 200Kb/tgz it had no disk space.

Anyway, Icculus is the gaming turf for OS.
